Age of Aquarius

Hey there, remember me? I’m Dawn from Alex Year Two.

No?

Let me remind you:
card1

Riiight. Now you remember them me.

I am in desperate need of your help. It’s vital people. VITAL.

It’s even more important than (then?) when I asked for advice about what color to paint my toenails.

This is about hair.

Once upon a time, I was featured on Hair Thursday. (You’ll have to click over for this – kinda like a scavenger hunt – I’m on the bottom.)

Now the beautiful Sarah gave me great advice, then my life blew up and I am just now ready to tackle this here hair situation.

Kicked in the ass by this photo taken by my husband, Scout.

I’ve worked on taking better care of it so it looks less frizzola.

Sarah gave me conservative cutting advice (because I came off like a chicken shizzle in my email) – and I totally trust her. But then I found out about Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths …. 8 inches off my hair …. hm ….

I found someone to cut my hair, she’s never touched my hair before. This makes me a little nervous.

I’m committed to coloring my hair – it’s a good change. I’m waffling on whether or not I should follow my Hair Thursday advice to the letter or if I should chop off a big ole pony tail for the greater good.

First 100 voters get a chance to control my destiny! Big reveal will be at BlogHer!

When Dawn isn’t flashing her BEWBS over here, she struts her stuff over at Alex Year Two. After you vote about her hair, hop over there and read her adventures with Alex, Scout, and… drunk santa?  Hm….

Go for the cut! I am now growing mine out for Locks of Love. Never done it before. But in the mean time, I am trying out some old favorite styles and maybe practicing some new ones, to keep from the plain ponytail. Today was a half french braid.

I always loved my hair the day it was cut short and then hated it til it grew back out. Somehow the length keeps my frizz in check.

I just donated my 10 inches (that’s what he said) to Locks of Love. Big proponent of it. I don’t regret it at all, even though I may have cried during the cut. It was totally worth it. The shock is subdued by knowing you did something good.

My cousin’s daughter got cancer when she was two years old. She’s spent the last twelve years in and out of hospitals and has had dozens of surgeries. She was even on a Wheaties box once. Because of all the treatments she received, her growth is stunted. She looks closer to 10 than 14, though she is all 14 inside. You can imagine she has a hard time relating to anyone. About a year ago she was finally able to get a wig of real human hair through one of these programs and cover up her scraggly head of wispy hair, and she’s become a new girl. She finally has the confidence to talk to other people and make friends. If you can imagine doing that for another child like her, you’re imagining a truly wonderful thing.

I chopped 12 inches off my hair for Locks of Love earlier this year and it’s one of the best things I’ve done for myself in forever.

I wrote about it here, hoping it would inspire some others to do the same:

I won’t be at BlogHer to see the results, but whatever is decided, I hope you love it!

That depends… how many more kids are you having? My hair got a little bit shorter after each of my kids were born, and I’ve never had long hair to begin with. I finally had my husband get a vasectomy, before I looked like Liza Minneli.
    Go short… it’s easier.

Hair? This post was about HAIR? You had me with the shot of ‘the rack’. Because I’m a big ‘rack’ guy. Not ‘big rack’, mind you. Not necessarily. It’s really all in the presentation. Now, if you had included a picture the ‘THE RACK’, and run a side by side comparison, we could have had a post with some real pulling power, and then you could have gone on with the stuff about the hair (cut it, BTW) and you would have had many more commenters, sooner.

I have hair that’s curly like yours, and I can’t recommend highly enough Lorraine Massey’s book on hair care, Curly Girl. Changed my life.

  14. #14 by Jennifer, Playgroups are no place for children on July 7, 2008 - 2:17 PM

I would stick to what Sarah told you. She didn’t steer me wrong with my hair.

Now with that said, several other commenters have mentioned donating your hair to Locks of Love. Of course that would be a wonderful thing to do! I just think your long, wavy hair is very pretty. On you.

Personally, I think Sarah’s advice is good, BUT I also think this:

The choice you make with number two benefits someone other than yourself, which, in the long run, might make you feel much better than the haircut you’ll get with Sarah’s advice. (and Memarie Lane’s comment made me cry, damnit.)

On top of that, there’s the fact that your hair will grow back after (if) you donate it, and then you can STILL get the haircut Sarah recommended. WIN, WIN, right?

I think it’s obvious which option I voted for. ;-)

That is a big step of trust for a stylist that hasn’t touched your hair before. THAT said, I have been going to a stylist for forever that I usually love and now I have freaking ORANGE STRIPES ON MY HEAD.

    So?

    I say go for it.

I went with a big old short cut and I like it now… my theory is that every woman LOOKS better with hair shorter than what she currently has, but every woman also FEELS better…

Cut, color and donate! I had 15 inches cut off about two years ago and donated to Locks of Love. The feeling of helping a child feel more “normal” during such a trying time will precede any anxiety of learning how to style a new hairstyle. Your hair will grow back much quicker and healthier than a child with cancer. Go for it!!!! You won’t regret it!

Cut out a picture of the hair you want and take it to the hairstylist and tell her that that’s exactly how you want it.

  26. #26 by stephanie on July 8, 2008 - 10:41 AM

Dawn, I say go for it. My hair is actually pretty similar to yours. (If you’re curious, there’s a couple pics of me on this post: http://littlestuffoflife.blogspot.com/2008/05/our-california-adventure.html.) (I kind of hate how I look at the moment, so I don’t post too many photos with me in them.)

And I’ve actually been planning to do a big chop for locks of love. And maybe color it – for fun.

I figure, why not? It’s a good cause, and I’m sick of my hair. Everyone wins. Plus, it can always grow back.

speaking from someone who has your hair..you can cut it if you really don’t have time to do anything with it. however, you might miss it over time. don’t cut it too short.
