Could ya think of me when you wee?

When was the last time you really looked at what was in your hand when you’re sitting on the toilet?

If it’s anything but toilet paper, I don’t want to hear about it. ;-)

But how MUCH toilet paper are you using?  John and I have agreed that over time, it’s easy to form a bad habit of grabbing way more than you need.  And we’re pretty sure we could stand to use less.

For 4 weeks, we’re going to see how much TP we use.  Then, for the next 4 weeks, we’re going to pay attention to what we “grab out of habit” and reduce it a little each time.

And I’m challenging you ALL to do this with us.  You can think of me every time you sit on the crapper.  What could be more fun?

It’ll be easy: just count up all the TP rolls in the house when you start, and keep track of anything that comes in during that time (TP purchases).  When the first 4 weeks are up, take stock.  The difference is how many rolls you used during the four weeks.

For the second half of the challenge, just make a conscious effort to use a little less than what you would normally “grab out of habit” when you’re using the toilet.  At the end of four weeks, determine the difference between what you had to start with and what you’re left with, again.

With this TP CHallenge we’ll see what just a little change can do to save resources.

Start date for the First Four Weeks is Wednesday, June 11, 2008.  End date is July 8, 2008.

Start date for the Second Four Weeks is July 9, 2008.  End date is August 6, 2008.

The PSBN post for August is scheduled for August 11, 2008.  I would love for you all to take this challenge and then post about it on August 11.  Link in to my post that day and let’s share our results.  It’s really a very easy step to take.  It costs you absolutely no money, and barely any effort.

Are you with me?  Let’s see what a small change in habit can save us.

Money on toilet paper, for sure.  And you know what else?

I really like these thingies:
05.20.08 theybeckon

And maybe we can save some of them, if we change our habits indefinitely.  Whatcha think?

Leave me a comment telling me you’re in.

(Mr. Linky is here so you can add links to any PSBN or any type of “Green” posts you’ve done. Thanks!)

  • I am already mindful of how much I use. I use a mininum, except during THAT time each month…then all bets are off. But this week I will also get my kids on board.

  • Sadly, I am guilty of using too much on toilet paper. I am not proud of this. I don’t remember how I learned doing this but I just have the basic fear of erm, leaving something down there.

It’s much easier when you use water and soap and tissue. But with tissue alone, oh my.

Anyway, this is a great post for saving the environment. It actually starts with us.

I cut back on my usage last year when the price went up, but the amount I grab has lately been creeping back up again. We’re still using what’s left of the last TP stock up when I bought 60 rolls at once. There’s still 25 rolls left so I just won’t buy any and see how long they last. Then I’ll buy 2 x 12 packs and see if we can stretch it further. Shouldn’t be too hard.

Sarcastic Mom says: Oh, you are awesome, awesome, awesome! :-)

  • I don’t use any.

Mostly because it never seemed sanitary to me. Dry paper?

I use a wet wipe, the kind we all use on babies. We don’t use toilet paper on diaper changes right? One wipe seems to work and is way less usage that TP. =)

To be honest, if I used any less I might as well go bare handed. CableDad and I did this experiment about 2 years ago and have *drastically* reduced the amount of paper we use.

On another note, try not flushing every time. You know the old saying, “if it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown flush it down.” You will be amazed at how much water you save that way. The results will be instant on your water bill.

    BTW, my post is up.

CableGirl’s last blog post..Let the composting begin – PSBN

Sarcastic Mom says: Very cool that you did it already! Also, we already reduced the amount
years ago when we started using those adult buttwipes for poos. One wet
wipe really does the job, then you just need a little TP to dry up. :-) He
    might like those!

Also, we totally started doing yellow-mellow,brown-down back around the time
we switched to cloth diapers. I talkeda bout it on that post:
His Butt is Toxic, and Yet, Eco-Friendly!
I actually plan on doing a whole water conservation post at some point, as
well, to reiterate that, and add other WC tips. :-)
    Thanks for posting today!

    June 9, 2008
  • OK. so I’m a bit strange. I ALWAYS use 5 squares and it’s only by habit of how I tug, it rolls out, & I stop it with my other hand. I don’t plan to count my squares while I’m pulling, because then I might skew my results by *trying* to only pull off five.

But sometimes, after I tear off my strip of TP, I count. And it’s always, always 5 squares. Isn’t that funny?

So I DO know how much I use every single time :)

The same can’t be said for my 19 year old stepson. I think he averages about 3/4 roll each time he craps. And then he forgets that it got clogged. And I get to find it. Lovely! Why do boys make such big turds?

    HappyCampers’s last blog post..I Wish I Could Do It…

Sarcastic Mom says: I have a tendency to use the same amount of squares, too. But over time, it seems to creep up some. I want to see if I can do with less and still get by. Little things make a big difference in the long run, and I’m willing to sacrifice for the good, ya know? :-)

Also, you might want to introduce your stepson to those wet wipes they make. That would seriously reduce his TP consumption, I promise. ;-)

Sarcastic Mom says: I find those wet wipes they make help, too. If you can’t go the bidet route for some reason, you may be able to get him to try those.
Oh, and just to gross you out some more: DOOKIE.

My brother went to China a couple years ago with his wife’s family, who are Chinese. He was unprepared for the lack of TP. It’s a very rare thing there. • CB and I use toiletpaper for more than just butt wiping, plus I often use a wet wipe on my bum. I feel more clean that way. Also, due to the weird bathroom situation, we use a “peepot” when we’re upstairs, so it means we use the toilet for pee a lot less, therefore flushing a lot less.

lilacspecs’s last blog post..Come as You Are

Sarcastic Mom says: We use toilet paper for nose blowing, too. But I just can’t bring myself to use cloth “hankies.” *shudder* I’m a wuss about a snot-crusty piece of cloth. We do use paper-towels – but we’ve reduced the amount we use for household cleaning by using cleaning cloths. Next, I’m also going to gather up some old rags, so I can wipe up Braden’s potty training messes with cloth, too, instead of paper towels. Reduce!!!

    June 9, 2008
  • Kris

The kids are allowed three squares. Period. (Well ok, if it’s extra messy I’ll allow them a few more. Bug, when she’s sleep-crapping, tends to pull off too much and we find a wad in there in the morning still trying to be flushed.)

For me – three for normal “bizness” and four for crap. If I’m on the rag, anything goes – or I’ll use wipes because…just, EW.

I don’t know how long a typical roll lasts in our house. it depends on whether or not I’ve made my chili or if we’ve been eating a lot of stuffed cabbage. But we do limit how much we use and we buy double rolls so we’re not running out so often.

For the record, Charmin blocks up my fucking toilet. Scott brand makes me shove my finger up my ass, and I don’t play that. Give me my store brand paper any day of the week. Strong enough to wipe your ass, but “melts” after sitting in the toilet for a few minutes and easier to flush.

    Kris’s last blog post..This is just nuts…

Sarcastic Mom says: Three squares is very conservative! Rock on. Also, you cracked me up in all kinds of different ways, and I thank you for that. We use Quilted Northern. I HATE Charmin. It… uh… sticks to me. ???

    June 9, 2008
  • I use as little as possible, but that’s mainly because I’m cheap. This is true of so many areas.

Anyway, since you said my one little line in an otherwise completely unrelated post would count, I put up my link. I haven’t printed one single recipe on a piece of paper since mid- to late April, and that happens to have not used any paper, too. :)

I’ve limited my use of paper towels drastically and have been boycotting my dryer, too.

Sadly, all of this has more to do with my paranoia that the cost of gas is an indicator that we are totally screwed and that we are headed for tougher times, but if it helps be good to the environment, then that’s nice, too. I do like trees. And coffee. Not that coffee has anything to do with trees…

One brand. This company made 5 brands of TP, plus a number of brands of paper towels and napkins. You can probably do the math. :-(

i have a long history of ALLEGED toilet paper over-consumption… i can remember my military dad very clearly barging into my room when i was about 12 and telling me that there ” is NOTHING you can do in a bathroom that requires more than 3 squares!!!”… as a woman, i know he is wrong… when my husband and i started living together he remarked out of the blue one day ” apparently toilet paper consumption is one of those exponentially increasing things… like, there are two of us now, but we consume, like, 4 times the amount of TP….” then he shot me his ” i’m just sayin’….. ” look… i leave on friday for ukraine for 10 days and one of the things we have to bring our own supply of is TP… i’m not sure the FAA weight regs will allow me to bring enough… i’m desperately afraid of the TP rationing that will ensue… but i’ll definitely be cutting back in the near future… for 10 days at least…

    June 10, 2008
  • We already use it VERY sparingly. It takes us about 5 months (or longer) to go through a 24 pack of toilet paper. I say that’s pretty darn good! And that’s not the super duper thick shit either. Just two-ply regular rolls of Angel Soft.

back from Ukraine… and i did have to use less… their wimpy toilets have trouble flushing down waste, let alone TP… i packed 4 rolls for my husband and i for 11 days… scary!!! in the end i wound up giving away one roll and leaving almost all of one behind! incidentally their toilet paper is like crepe paper… only it is a putrid brown. they could really liven things up by using some brightly colored actual crepe paper! incidentally, they don’t seem much interested in livening anything up. very former soviet union. very big dirty european city. and the trash, oh, the trash. everywhere. we think we have a litter problem here? not compared to l’viv!!! anyway, i did learn that it takes less when you have less. and after i spend a couple days taking a HOT shower 6 times a day just.because.i.can and wrapping my arm to the elbow with TP just.because.i.can i will definitely start using less!
