Could you get right on that, Eclipse and Orbit? Thanks!

When I wrote recently about how I’m re-motivated to attack my fat rolls, get in shape, and lose some more weight, some of you said, “Me too!” and others said something like, “Tell us how it goes, we need encouragement!”

So, um, I’m going to keep you updated on how I’m doing and what’s working for me, and you can chime in and let me know the same.  In this way, I get held accountable by all of you to actually keep doing this!

It’s really very easy to sit on the couch and eat popcorn and M&Ms.  Eating healthy all day (or rather, just NOT EATING ALL DAY LONG) and keeping myself moving is the hard-to-do thing!

Since the last post I wrote about all this, I’ve actually hung out with Billy Blanks 4 times.  Yes, I know that is a small number of times to write on a page this big.  But I actually feel REALLY triumphant about it, because I wanted to give up EVERY TIME and I DIDN’T. (I also had to wait out a nagging lower back pain - remember to listen to your body when it tells you to wait a couple days!)

I still fall on my face at least 5 and a half times each time I try to do all the stuff Billy’s doing, but at the end when he says he loves me, it makes me all gushy and stuff.  And the bruises really do fade away after a couple of days if you make sure you’re getting enough vitamin D and K.  So, you know, I keep at it.

The cool thing is that I actually am getting better at that crazy Tae Bo crap, and I’m able to complete more of the video each time.  When I get winded, I grab a glass of water, sit on the edge of the couch, and keep moving my arms and legs while I sip the H20.  That keeps me hydrated and gives me a little time to catch my breath while I’m still keeping my body moving (any movement is better than none).  When I feel stronger again, I jump right back in with what Billy’s doing and keep at it.  There is no shame in this!  In fact, practicing this type of acceptance about what your body is currently able to do will help you actually stick with the program long enough to see results and improve your performance over time.  So don’t ever feel bad about listening to your body.

I have yet to re-attack Miss D’umo specifically.  But you just wait.  I am going to do that before long, and I will make sure to post pictures for all you lovely people.

My snacking curb tip for right now is that I drink a ton of water and I chew gum.  It really actually helps dispel some of the pointless snacking I want to do.  (As for meals, I’ve been eating stuff like this.)

If only they’d come out with ChocolateCakewithWhiteIcing flavored sugarless gum, then my life would be complete.

What works for you?

  • I’ve been working on losing weight myself. I don’t know if you have discovered it or if anyone has recommended it on a previous post but try out sparkpeople.com. It’s free and it gives you a place to log your food/calories and fitness and lots of other great information and motivation.

Eating a small meal or snack every 2-3 hours is something that works well for me along with the water. That and I have to start the day with a good healthy breakfast with a protein and fiber.

I just wrote an entry about how I am doing it! I am doing the Couch-to-5k program and a podcast that I found online which matches it perfectly. I have also made a rule that I don’t eat after 7pm, which is TOTALLY helping with late-night binges.

Lots and lots of water, extra movement here and there, and in three weeks I’m down 9 pounds. I’m excited and feeling fantastic about it!

  • Riding a bike to class helped me, and planning meals ahead of time. Making sure I only ate grain type carbs once a day, lots of fruit and vegetables. Right now I’m sucking bad. I started eating a ton of junk food again and not really planning meals well or ahead of time. It always happens when I have some sort of break in my routine. So when class starts again I’ll hopefully be able to take off what I’ve gained, cause right now it’s looking pretty grim.

and your drinking/resting routine is exactly what Billy suggests (and what I had to do too.)

I had to stop though because my knees and back would tell me to rest for more than a few days at a time.

  • I had to find a exercise video I could actually enjoy, once I did that, it made exercising so much more do-able. I use Yoga Booty Ballet Light and Easy, though it isn’t very easy!

I lost 60 lbs doing my own modified version of Weight Watchers. I wrote down what I ate and I counted points (I had a friend who did WW and she figured out my points for me). It worked great and I haven’t gained any of it back.

Good luck Lotus! I need to get back on track myself!

Anyhoo, I discovered it again yesterday in my THREE MONTH OLD baby’s closet, along with some other stuff I’d bought for after he was born. I reckon it’s time to dust it off and try it out. I’ll let you know how it goes, if I can get my feet out of my warm fluffy slippers long enough. Struggling to motivate myself while it’s SO cold out here (Africa).

My treadmill is dusty. I’m really bad about doing dvd work out videos. I am much better at walking on the treadmill and going to the gym (if I have one nearby that I like). The gym part might be tricky for awhile…we’ll see what happens.

  • What got me jumpstarted was making 30 day commitments – because I can do anything for 30 days.

I gave up chocolate for 30 days. I gave up eating after 9:30 p.m. for 30 days. I gave up eating out or getting delivery for 30 days. I did those small things (not all at once – I staggered each commitment so a new one started every third week) to get myself in the habit of making change.

Then after a couple months of my 30-day commitments I went all out and cut down to 1300 calories a day. I started the commitments in December 2007 and the 1300 calorie diet in February. I’ve lost 35 pounds thus far with a goal of losing another 50-60 by February 2009.

    You can do it!

    July 22, 2008
  • First, congratulations on taking the initiative! That’s always the hardest part!

For me, I’ve been doing Turbo Jam. LOVE IT! It makes me feel VERY powerful and I can’t believe how effective it is in just a short amount of time. It’s fun, upbeat and makes you feel like you can conquer anything. Highly recommend it.

I’m also a treadmill junkie. I love to walk and my husband installed a small flat screen TV above the treadmill on a shelf, so I watch all my DVD’s on the treadmill. I usually alternate Turbo Jam one day, then the treadmill the next day and that seems to really work for me.

As far as eating, I abhor diets. They have never worked for me. Instead, I just pay close attention to the portions I eat and no seconds. In addition, if you’re working out, you need more protein for energy, so the pamphlet that came with Turbo Jam recommends eating a few eggs (hard-boiled if you can stand them) for breakfast and salmon, or something equally low-fat and high in protein for lunch. I was pretty skeptical at first, but WOW. It really does make a huge difference to how I feel the rest of the day.

Also, I think the time of day may be a factor, too. For example, I have more energy for Turbo Jam in the morning. But I think the treadmill is more effective, for me, at night (I’m too tired to think about eating and after cleaning up, go to bed).

Oh, one more thing, I read somewhere that if you eat carbs before you work out, it’ll curb your appetite and you’ll feel less hungry after your work out.

As you can see, I’ve given this exercise thing a lot of thought. *grin* Sorry this is so long.

Good luck! Keep us posted on your progress!

Wow, good for you! I’ve been doing a Kettlebell dvd workout. It was on sale at Target so I thought, what the hey. I like it. I have 15-20 more lbs to lose.
I try to keep my portions small and just eat more often. I stick to whole foods.
As a side note, be very wary of “low fat”. If you cut out all fat, your body will try to store more. We need fat, but not all fats are equal. Fats from things like nuts, avocados, raw coconut and grass fed beef actually help you lose weight.

I have been working so much that I barely have time to eat, but I still haven’t lost any weight.

I used to hang with Billy Blanks, when I had a VCR that worked. Since then, I’ve hung out with the guy from Hip Hop Abs, whose name I cannot remember – but the moves he forced me to make seemed inappropriate in front of my son.

Somehow gyrating my hips to “Don’t you wish your girlfriend was hot like me?” just wasn’t right. I dunno.

  • I am a total sweets junkie. I HAVE to have something sweet, so I buy the 60 calorie chocolate sticks from hershey’s. They are awesome. Just make sure you only eat 1. LOL And I also snack on the gerber puffs. Yea I know. What are you doing eating baby stuff. Well those damn apple cinnamin puffs are pretty good. And you can have 65 pieces for 25 calories. I have a stash in my desk at work. Anyway keep up the good work. And Billy totally kicks my ass too =)

  • So, I’m leaving for vacation on Saturday and two weeks ago I realized that being at the beach would mean I would have to be in a bathing suit. I’ve been working out everyday since!! I’ve been using Turbo Jam and while it makes me look like a total fool it works! It’s dancey and sometimes hard to follow but I’m getting better at it and I’m able to make it much further through a workout than before!

I also use Mr. Blanks. I LOVE Tae Bo! Seriously. It’s hard but it works. And yes, I feel like a completely uncoordinated fool doing it but it’s worth it! I’ve also been, on my really tired and sore days, WAlking for Weight loss.
I’m committed to working out 6 days a week until vacation and then at least every other day while away. I’m careful about what I eat, too. I gave up Soda. I gave up any alcohol during the week and even on the weekends I don’t much anymore. The soda has been the WORST. I would kill for a Coke Zero right now!!

    I’ve rambled….

  • I’ve lost 15 pounds since March by eating whatever I want but making it healthier or eating smaller portions. I track my calories and carbs/fat/protein balance (50%/30%/20%, respectively, works for me) on Daily Plate, and I have a free day every Friday when I throw out all rules but still track it anyway. I could have lost more weight more quickly, but for me this is not a diet; I’m not in a race. This truly is a lifestyle change.

I walk 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the afternoon with the work ladies, plus some “bonus” walks when I feel like it. I just bought a granny bike, too, and it will add another element. Once in awhile I do my Balance Ball workout (similar to Pilates).

For me, the key is to still eat the things I like, just healthier or in smaller portions. Last night I had Sour Cream Chicken Enchiladas (the pics will be on my Winners this Sunday, along with the recipe, as always), and yes, they were as decadent as they sounded, but within my goals. Dieting in the traditional sense would not work for me. This does.

    Good luck, Lotus!

I’d like to second the recommendation about drinking lots of water—it does stop the snacking urge. I’ve tried to make it a habit at work—keep bottle next to computer, keep cup next to keyboard, keep sipping and refilling. When you’re moving around with the household tasks, I guess that translates to carrying the glass with you and refilling every time you pass the kitchen.

  • I started by keeping a food journal. I did my best to keep my calorie intake in the range of 1200-1800 a day. I no longer keep the food journal but I did it long enough that I could pretty much guesstimate my calorie intake now so I just try to eat reasonably and/or limit my portions.

As far as exercise, I started by doing some workout DVD’s (alternate cardio and body scultping) 3 days a week. I’ve since added hip hop cardio classes at a dance center twice a week (just to keep things interesting). And as much as I hate to run, I try to throw that in once in awhile, too. I think the most important thing is to keep it fun and to keep mixing things up. When I started to get bored with my workout DVD’s, I noticed that I found a lot of reasons not to workout. So by doing all these different types of exercise, I actually look forward to working out coz it’s always a challenge.

It took me a couple of months but I’m down 9 lbs so far – 15 more to go to get back to my pre-kid weight!

If I can at least do that I feel great for the day. Then on the days I have enough energy to pull out the machine and really exercise it’s such a boost.

  • I turned 40 in March – took a good look at my ass and said, ‘enough is enough’. I started slowly with beginner yoga just to get my body stretching and I was amazed at how much it helped my flexibility and got me in the ‘mood’ to do more.

Then I started lifting small weights and doing very basic exercises, you know, sit-ups, leg lifts, butt crunches and some pilates – easy stuff – but this too got me more in the mood.

Then I came across a website that challenged you to train to speed walk a half-marathon. This is easy for me b/c I don’t have small kids anymore and more time, but walking with a stroller would work too.

Halfway through my training, I was walking about 7 miles a day, I decided (after prompting from a friend) to switch to training for a 5K. Now, let me tell you, I am not and have never been a runner – so this was started with some skepticism – but it is a great combination of walking and running and not too strenuous – really.

I’m about halfway through my training now and actually look forward to it every time. It’s only 3 days a week, but the difference in how I feel is amazing.

Along with this, I cut out snacking, cut down portion size – not to the point that I am hungry – just making much better choices when I do snack – fruit, yogurt, veggies, (I lived on pea pods dipped in hummus for weeks – yum) and cut out a lot of carbs – not all – but most.

I have no idea how much weight I’ve lost b/c I don’t own a scale, but I did have to buy new pants & shorts b/c my old ones were too baggy – that always feels good! If I had to guess? I’d say I’ve lost about 15 pounds and it feels so good.

I guess a short way of saying this is, you’d be amazed at how much just taking baby steps makes a difference.

Best of luck to you – I’ll be following your progress – we all need a little encouragement!

I realized i was a carb addict, so I started with Atkins to cut the addiction. Also started jogging. Once I got up to a good number of miles, I put carbs (good ones, not Coke and Cheetos) back in the diet. A year ago I couldn’t run down the street, now I’m training for a half marathon in December.
