First off, having your blog hacked is crazy. I thought that only happened to teenage girls on MySpace.

My husband just sent me a story about the blog host Journalspace where they overwrote their backups or some such nonsense so they lost everyone’s blogs.

I think this is the universe telling me to back up my blog.

Kinda like the st time my laptop crashed and we were able to recover most of it. Yet, I did not heed the warning and the second time I lost a year’s worth of non-backed up digital pics.

Sigh.

Very sad day.

So do you back up your blog? How does one do that it they don’t trust their hosts backup procedure?

Must be prepared and take the universe seriously this time.

Being hacked sucks. I had a blog back in 2000 (before they were called blogs) that was hacked. It taught me a valuable lesson.

1) Keep backups of not only your database, but also your .php files.
2) Don’t take it personally. They didn’t focus their efforts on you because you’re you. They have scripts that scour the intarwebz looking for sites running software with known security holes (i.e. WordPress in your case, PostNuke in my case in 2000). Then their scripts overwrites the files used to display the page with their own webpage data. Usually it is just a index.php type file with their message in it.

This brings me back to my first note. If you have a backup of the modified WordPress and theme files, you can simply reupload them. In these cases, the hackers are not touching your database, which is where all your posts, comments, good stuff like that, is saved. Being that the most important part of your blog is exactly this type of data, a hack generally doesn’t bring you to your knees (or kill your blog all together). It’s simply a nuisance at that point because you have to reupload your themes and, maybe, redo and modifications you’d made.

3) The hacker isn’t really a hacker. They aren’t smart people. They download scripts from IRC and run them. They are doing NO original thought or work when this happens. They are clicking a button and letting the script do the job. It is this reason that you can feel superior to them in every way. If that makes you feel good.

I have had a site hacked in the past, and I know how it feels. I agree with Russ, hackers aren’t smart, they just run scripts trying to find a place where they can dump their crap. I will never understand what’s the motivation behind such a stupid activity, but well… it seems to work for them.

But I have for hackers the same respect I have for those who -for example- create computer virii. None. They’re just pure trash, and I pity them, they really have no life. Hmpf.
