it is funny how
people look at you oddly
standing in the rain
if you don’t hurry
because you’re just enjoying
the water falling.
if you do not have
a worried look on your face
or an umbrella
they will slow down and
stare at you as if to say,
“what is wrong with you?”
i just smile back and
step in another puddle
as they hurry on.
mud squishes between
my wet toes and the edges of
my mouth lift right up.
i’ll pick another
glistening flower and my
jeans will get darker.
eventually
soggy footprints lead a path
back to my doorstep.
people will still drive
by, dry, inside their warm cars.
my smile is warmer.

But Lotus, I might MELT.
I haven’t stood in the rain for such a long time. The drizzle, yes, but not the full blown rain.
Now laying in the wet grass in order to get a photo I liked? I do that often.

I LOVE walking in the rain. I used to do it a lot with our dog, but we haven’t had as much rain the last couple of years, so I haven’t been able to. People do look at you strangely, though. Where we lived before was an island with about four other families, and I was the mad woman. Rain, shine, wind, I walked. It is only water, but it didn’t make me grow – I’m still under 5′!

I wish I WOULD melt. A little. About 40 pounds worth. I’d walk in a hundred rain showers if that’s what it would take.
And I can’t remember, except for when I was a kid, the last time I had mud squishing up between my toes.
If I ever get down to Tennessee, we’ll have to search out a mud puddle together.

Love, love, love this. Getting caught in the rain (with or without Pina Coladas) makes me feel ALIVE and real and happy. Unless I’m dressed up and it’s a downpour. Otherwise, sometimes, yah, exactly like you said.

Lovely poem. My kids and I love walking in the rain. They complain about going to their grandparents’ house any time it rains, because they won’t let them go out in it at all.
I’m looking forward to it raining here. We’re currently more in the 100 degree weather kind of thing.

Thank you. I love Haiku. I have taught my kids that you can speak in it and really throw the world off kilter.

Gorgeous poem & sentiment.
The last time I stood in the rain [sprinkles, really] was at this year’s Burning Man. It was magical.
