Sometimes you realize that something is kind of Eco-Friendly after the fact.
Like, after you do it because you are a cheap bastard.
Last year, I decided to really start teaching Braden to wash his hands on his own – meaning that he’d do all steps without my assistance/intervention. Previously, I’d turn on the water, put the soap in his hands, rub them together… you get the drift.
In order to make it easier on him and cheaper on our budget, I decided that a foaming soap dispenser was a good idea. That way he’d have instant lather, instead of having to create it from goopy soap. I figured it would really save on soap, too, since he wouldn’t be sliming his hands excessively if he had the foam.
I was right. It was easier on him not having to create lather. Now, figuring out that he had to have the other hand under the pump when he pressed it down? THAT WAS THE HARD PART. Hah!
By the time he was a pro at it, the dispenser was almost empty. I eyed the bottle of Method Green Tea & Aloe Hand Soap that was up on top of the cabinet where he couldn’t reach it, longingly. But no, I didn’t want him Gooping!
Then it hit me: the stuff in the foaming dispenser really just looked like heavily watered down soap. So I tried it… I put in a small amount of soap and filled the rest of the dispenser up with water.

TOTALLY WORKED. And now we all wash our hands with that soap! We’re using way less soap for hand washing, which is cool and it falls under the “Reduce” category of Eco-Friendliness.
It will also save ya some bucks. They charge way more than they should for the watered down soap in the foam dispensers, so just buy that ONCE and then refill it yourself. And of course, if you choose an Eco-Safer soap like Method, or Lemon-Brite, you’re also treating Mother Earth kind by not dumping chemicals all up on her shiznite.
Do you have an article or post about something “green” that you do in your home, or on Eco-Friendly tips? Please feel free to link to it on the Mr. Linky below.
I used to do this type of post once a month, and it’s called Project Support Beauty in Nature. You can click that link (or the tab on the navigation bar under the website header) to read all about it, how it developed, and see a list of past posts and participants. I have had the project on hiatus for several months while I tried to find the emotional energy to write more again.
I’m happy to say, the project is back up and “airs” the 2nd Monday of every month.
Please feel free to add your “green” link to the Mr. Linky (just below) in this post anytime for the rest of this week.

We used to do that too! We even had the same funky dispenser (ours came with berry scented soap). Unfortunately those foaming dispensers have a limited life span, so eventually you have to pay the high price for watered down soap again. Which I so honestly wish I could do! We can’t get them here and the ones I brought back a few years ago have long ago croaked, so I just water down the soap in the regular dispenser now. I do it to the dish soap too – am I cheap or what?

We use the same soap dispensers too! See a trend here?
We also use Charlie Soap as our laundry detergent. All natural, environmentally friendly, and is THE most amazing detergent I’ve ever used. It’s scent free, is hypoallergenic, and gets even the toughest stains out. I recommend it to everyone – and when you order it your first time you get a discount… oh yeah, free shipping all the time too!

I might try that too!

That’s a great idea. Definitely one that I’m going to put into practice. I hate the ‘cheap’ bars of soap that we’ve been reduced to, because of the way they sit there getting all smooshy and gross. Hello bacteria heaven! So, totally going to try this out. Thanks!

Definitely something I will be doing in the future! I have a foaming face wash dispenser that I can use. You know, once I finish using my oh so nice face wash.

We do the same thing with our dishsoap too. Also useful when the boy decides he should help with the washing up and uses the entire bottle.

We use foaming soap dispensers as well! We have one in every bathroom and one in the kitchen. They’re great. Oh, and I have a travel size in my purse as well.
Tho I do like the neat shape of yours better. Mine are pretty plain. Where did you get yours?

You know what? I was looking at the foaming soap this weekend and even after coupons, it was still significantly more than regular soap. I would have been so pissed if I’d bought some and then read this! I’m definitely going to buy 1 bottle soon though so I can refill it. What a great idea!

I posted last week about foaming hand soap. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of it sooner.
My daughter recently told me that she wanted her frog soap dispenser back and I filled it with the same concoction (instead of the soap that has SLS that it was meant for.)
And today I posted about buying yogurt in bulk and making individual yogurt cups that you can grab from the fridge.
I am trying to post a new “eco-cheap” idea each week or two, so you’ll have to stop by and see what I have up my sleeves. Maybe I’ll do a Mr. Linky too and we can share each others “eco-cheap” ideas.

That’s a great idea.
For counter spray, I use water, vinegar and essential oils. Totally natural and works as well as the detergent stuff.

We finally found a soap dispenser that is easy for my daughter to use. She loves being able to push her stool up to the sink, turn on the water, soap up, and wash her hands by herself. We worked with her on just turning the water on as much as she needs and taking only one squirt of soap. It took a while but she is able to wash completely on her own!

That is so cool. I have watered down the soap before because the straw part always seems to be too short, but it never foamed. Great idea and I have 2 little kidlets who love to use as much soap as possible on their tiny little hands.

That’s really clever! I do that near the end of a bottle of soap, just to get all the soap out. Same with shampoo. With barbecue sauce the other night, I added pineapple juice to get the last of the sauce out.

I am so totally doing this when the two dispensers from Aldi run out.
Psst, did you know that you only need 2 tablespoons of liquid detergent in a front load washer? Most people use twice that amount. To ensure you are using the right amount, pour two tablespoons of water into the dispenser, then take a sharpie marker to make a line around it to show when it’s full.
