Not Words

I was going to forego writing a post tonight for tomorrow, something I never do, because, well.  I’m just really tired.

My mind hurts, my body hurts, my heart hurts.

I felt that if I wrote, I needed to tell you the most recent developments in the House Hell Saga, and if you can forgive me, the truth is I just don’t have it in me right now.

My eyes just want to close and my brain wants to let me not feel it for a long while.

And I was about to do that, when something really beautiful which I am completely undeserving of smacked me in the face.  I’m nearly speechless.

But I want to say that I’ve met some of the most beautiful (and not just skin-deep, that) women of my lifetime recently, during this blogging thing. Three of them made me cry tonight.  I’m absolutely not worthy of their immense kindness.  But they are trying to help me get my son out of this hell-hole, and for that I am so incredibly grateful that there are not words enough.

Angie, Dawn, VDog:  I hope you can feel the emotion and immense thanks in my ‘not words.’ <3

  • Well I have been a bit of a lurker but haven’t lurked in a bit so I was unaware of the hell hole.

You are perfectly within your right to withhold rent (you MUST put in escrow though) from your landlord until he fixes the problem. Do you have a landlord tentant agency in your area?

In our state you can call your State Rep and get a Landlord Tenant handbook that tells you all your rights as a tenant and how to deal with situations like this lawfully.

If worse comes to worse, call your local TV station. Media and embarrassment is always a great way to get what you need. You can do some social action/civil disobediance by camping out on the lawn to make a statement that its safer for you to live outside than in your house. Of course that would be hard to do with kids but maybe you have a crazy fun brother or drunk uncle that can do it for you.

    Good luck!

  • Wow, what an awesome gesture. The question that roars through my head every time something else goes wrong with your house is “Where the hell are the rental property standards people?” The legislation around rentals here in Ontario is naturally geared towards the landlord, but they couldn’t pull that kind of crap even here. They’d have been under a court order to get it fixed ages ago.

  • I’m taking my change to the bank as soon as I get home, this evening. I would buy a plush toy, but Annie already complains that my Chicago Bears teddy bear makes it too crowed in bed – if I added another one I think she’d toss one of us out. And it might not be the teddy bear.

  • i agree with one of your posters, contact the media.
they usually do stories like these especially when there is such a cute little baby involved! your landlord sucks ass and the whole community you live in needs to see it so that others can also stand up for their living conditions. no one should be treated like your management company is treating you!

  • Lotus, I’m so sorry I’ve been out of the loop recently. I’ve just read up on all the recent things going on in your house. I’m so sorry! Please, let me know if there is anything I can do. Feel free to message me to vent or just a shoulder to cry on. No one should have to live like this. I’m so glad other bloggers are supporting you. You and your family deserve so much more.

  • I know you already know this, because I am always late on these things, but mold is toxic. No heat is a health hazard. Once a landlord is notified of a public health issue, he has 48 hours (not business) to FIX it. COMPLETELY.

If it is not fixed in 48 hours, you have the right to vacate the premises. And get every dime of your deposit back. And if he doesn’t return it in a week, I think, you are then entitled to your deposit times three.

This is law. There is no way around it. You need to call the health department and have them come out. They will site this and contact your landlord. You technically have stayed your 48 hours plus, but if you want to get really legal, call the health department.

Oh, one more thing. If you choose to not vacate, you have the legal right to not pay one dime of rent until it is fixed.

Can you tell I’ve done this before?

Email me if you need any help. This one, I know all about.

  • Lotus,
Girl, you gotta knock off that “not deserving” crap. You are certainly deserving. You are one of the good people. Who deserve help and for things to go well.

I’m posting about this today and linking all around… its what I can do right now…

Hope you’re trying some of all the good ass-kicking advice you’re getting. There are definitely ways to get legal help without having money to pay a lawyer.

Didn’t get a chance to comment on the Hell Hole til now–the pictures were horrendous and I’m so glad you have someone to help you find a new place and maybe sue the living daylights out of those negligent landlords. Geez. THEY OWE YOU BIG TIME.

    Good luck, keep us posted.

    Cynematic

PS I was so moved by your nursing story. It happened to work for me and it’s something I’ll always cherish, but for others it never quite “takes” in spite of everything you try. Who could’ve predicted the proteins that caused upset in his belly? No one. And it is what it is, and takes nothing away from how much anyone adores their child or how they feed them. (I suspect I had the same problem as Braden when I was a baby; I was formula fed.)
