• the thing about running is you do have your days of awesomeness but on rare occasions you do have the suck balls kind of days…kind of like life. just keep on running.
FWIW while training for that Disney Princess Half, I learned that when my shins or knees hurt, whether i ran indoors or outdoors, i was usually due for a new pair of running shoes. it’s recommended that we replace our running shoes every 200-300 miles or so. sure enough, every 250 miles, my shins, knees and ankles start to kill me.
keep on running. if i’m lucky i would love to run with you at BlogHer

    • My shoes were actually relatively new when that happened – it truly was the indoor track. I was running for some time with no problems, then in less than a week of running on that track, I got the shin splints – I’ve been running outdoors again (with the same shoes) and haven’t had another problem with shin splints. That indoor track was awful – really short, sharp turns and uneven – perfect setup for shin splints.

No worries – I’ve developed a runner’s heart, and won’t be stopping. See you at Blogher! :)

  • Seems like running is a common blogging topic today (I mean, you did it, I did it, and at least one other person did it. Therefore, it’s trending, right?). But WAY TO GO on keeping it up even in the midst of pain and, um, accidents? Seriously, RUNNING! is totally awesome. And I never knew it until a few weeks ago, and then officially Saturday when I ran my first 5K. I’m pretty sure if I can do it even slightly successfully, you can conquer that bitch with your eyes closed. Do it!

    March 16, 2010
  • Running rules. I love running. Wanna know how to get rid of those shin splints? Run without shoes. Shoes are the enemy. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Hope you feel better soon, and can keep running. Because, like I said, running rules.

  • Oh, honey. I’ve been there. I ran a 5k a couple of years ao (booyah!) and the endurance-building part is brutal. I wish I could get over the whole mind-wandering boredness of it all. I like the running part, but I need something for my brain to do while I’m at it.

Know what else Kegels are good for? Trampoline-readiness training.

    • I have a goofy grin on my face quite often when I’m running… but that’s mostly because Flight of the Conchords is in my playlist. 😉

Only ever got the splints during the short time I used the indoor track – will never do that again.

I love running – it hurts so good! 😉

      March 16, 2010
  • I come to you, not as a runner, but as someone who is familiar with pain: all my sympathies and more. Your own personal therapies sound like the right thing. It’s an intervention I myself often employ, with great success. Or so I’m told; I often don’t remember. Anyways, good luck at you with all that physical exertion. (I’d say “break a leg”, but I’m not sure it’s appropriate here, and might actually make things worse….) 😉

Yep. I know all about this. I started running after my second child and the weight just FELL off. It was awesome. I was hooked. Then I got pregnant and running became harder. Then I had the baby and couldn’t run. Then I had to start over. Then I got fit again. Then I hurt my knee. Then I got pregnant again. Then I had another baby. And now I’ve just started running again. And Saturday I hurt my knee. Hmphf!
Does this mean I am going to be having another baby again? EGAD!!!!

Oh and one more thing, I only get shin splints when I need new shoes. Seriously. It is a sign I need new shoes. No joke.
    Good luck!

    • I’ve read that (and been told that) but the shoes are in good shape still, it was definitely the track I was using. My running is going great again now that I’ve healed the injuries. But I am definitely going to keep tabs on the shoes and replace them when it’s time!

I’m really sorry to hear about all the pain you’re experiencing, and I hope you feel better soon, but on the bright side, I think you’ve just motivated me to start running again. It is something I haven’t done seriously since high school, but reading your post made me remember how good it made me feel and I think it may do great things for my sanity after being at home with an infant and a toddler all day. So thanks! (And I really do hope you can stay pain-free for a long time!)

So happy to see you so strong and healthy! Your greatness inspires me! 😀

  • We were talking about the jumping jack issue last night. I refuse to do them. Absolutely refuse. I am not going to smell like pee.

Also…shin splints and pee pants are surefire signs that you shouldn’t exercise. ever. And then you look like my fat ass. Who *wouldn’t* want to look like this piece of awesomeness, right? :-)

I love your Piece of Awesomeness.

  • It could be worse, you could have torn a tendon in your ankle running on a treadmill over a year ago and only next Monday finally be going to a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon because before you were diagnosed with something else that you had REALLY painful treatments for (and expensive too darn it). sigh.

    ok- I am done now.

I am really glad you are all healed up. You’ll find your mojo and endurance again in no time. I saw that silhouette photo of you – you’re a fit mamma now. 😀

  • I loathe running! And man, shin splints are a bitch. Had them in high school numerous times. And I once pulled a calf muscle while dancing/hopping around to entertain my toddler. That is some hurty-ass hurtiness! But those damn jumping jacks get me every time. I need pantyliners or something.

OMG. I laughed so hard I didn’t need to do jumping jacks to pee my pants :). In fact, I rarely have to go through that much effort…a good cough works just as well.

    March 16, 2010
  • Um dude… RUNNING! makes my lungs hurt and makes me want to die.

I like dance better for some odd reason… but with dance or yoga it’s not the vag muscles you need to worry about it’s the ones in your anus… because ripping ass when you jump or during a yoga pose is so not cool. LOL.

Look at the bright side: At least you didn’t shart yourself!

  • I lurve running. I really do. Training for a 10k got me in the best shape of my life. But you know what sucks? That first time back running. After the baby or the injury or whatever. It actually hurts my skin. Like my fat is so loose and jiggly it’s stretching and pulling at my pores. And if it’s cold, you get the itchy legs. And if you’ve just had a baby, you leak a little. From multiple places.
So then you’re just this jiggly girl hoofing it down the road scratching herself and trying not to pee and SO DAMN ANNOYED because this time last year you could pound out 4 miles like it was nothing and today you haven’t even left your driveway.
But it does come back. S-L-O-W-L-Y.

Awesome on the running. I’m walking and one day when I’m awesome like you I’ll be up to running, too. I definitely smell like pee, though. Can I still be in the cool kids club?

Lol, you said, “screaming like a banshee with a porcupine that’s been set on fire shoved up its anus.” I’ve heard that scream.
