We’ll miss you for sure, but you go ahead and take time off whenever you need to for as long as you need to. You and your family come first. I’m a migraine sufferer myself although I don’t get them as severely as others seem to. I can say that taking medication as soon as you notice symptoms helps enormously with lessening the severity of pain and/or dizziness. But since you are pregnant now (woo-hoo) I’d say discuss this carefully and fully with your doctor before you go taking handfuls of panadols or whatever.

now as a nurse may i smack that doc up side his head for being like that? seriously, me thinks any sudden visual field disturbance warrants some medical investigatioon.

  • Raging Dad

Yeesh, bummer with the migraine. My wife has had two of the ocular migraines, just as you described them except with no pain. Let me tell you though, she practically had a major panic attack the first time. She thought she was dying. I guess it’s pretty common. Hope you don’t get too many of them. Nothing like adding migraines to your already crazy-pregnant self!

  • OMG please don’t post a photo of a hospital wrist bracelet *ever* again without a giant disclaimer ABOVE it saying THE BABY IS FINE READERS! THE BABY IS FINE!

    Please.

My heart can’t take it. Okay? Just so you know.

Oh – hey, we’re born in the same year. Might be why I totally ‘get’ you, and your posts often have me clutching my sides and laughing hysterically. Unless they’re serious of course. In which case, like above, I HAVE A HEART ATTACK BECAUSE YOU FAILED TO REASSURE ME!!!

  • As soon as you started describing, I started nodding. Been there, done that. It is scary, isn’t it? I’d had migraines for a few years without an aura, but that first floater? I thought I had a detaching retina!

Rest up, as long as it takes. Your health, your baby’s health? They come first.

I am so hoping that’s the last one for you. However, if you get more, start taking note. What did you do? eat? Were you outside for a long time, exposed to an allergen?

I was having 4 to 5 migraines a week. I was taking a TOXIC dose of oral imitrex. We couldn’t figure out what was triggering them. My sister, also a long time migraine sufferer, called me one day. “Try getting rid of Nutrasweet. I did, and I haven’t had a migraine in a week.”

Believe it or not, several years of nearly daily migraines? Gone. I get maybe 4 or 5 a year. (Close call today, as a matter of fact.) Too many pistachios can also send me running for my injections.

If it’s hormonal, lets just hope it was a first month aberration and you’re done.

I’m sorry you’re dealing with them-I wouldn’t wish them on anyone.

  • I read somewhere (whilst googling probably) that migraines can show up during pregnancy for some women. Not something you wanted to know, but a possibility.

And I know exactly how bad you felt. I haven’t had a migraine in a few years, but when I used to get them, if I didn’t lay down and try and sleep, I would vomit and want to die. Not pleasant.

  • I get them monthly. When I was pregnant, at least once a week. For sure, if it reoccurs, note all of the up-to-the-minute stuff. Minimizing foodstuffs and allergens can pretty much get rid of them for a lot of people – if that’s the trigger.

And yeah, seriously you CANNOT not have a ‘baby is FINE’ banner above a picture of an ER braclet. I almost started crying right away. Don’t make me have to tell you, again, sister.

  • I got those auras sometimes when I lived in Japan and had no idea why, but half of my body would also go numb so that I was sure my brain was breaking in a deadly kind of way. Sometimes they hauled me to the eye doctor while I tried explaining in bad Japanese and to no avail that it was a vision problem and not an eye problem (explain that in a different language sometime, I dare you). In any case, Google finally is how I figured out that it was a migraine, minus the headache. :)

I am just glad you are OK and also glad you have good folks nearby enough and willing enough to help. Whew. Still just so glad you are OK and baby, too.

(Why does your comment love thing keep insisting on pulling a post I did over a week ago and not a recent one? Odd.)

  • I used to get them too – was on imitrex for them for some time. But about 6 months after moving to Thailand I did a major detox and haven’t had one since. Hope never to again as they are absolute debilitating crap! Glad you’re ok and hope you don’t have anymore. :)

  • Migraines are such a huge part of my life I don’t give them too much thought anymore. My biggest triggers are smells, especially chemical-ish smells (cleaners, people who marinate in their perfume, …) I’d suggest keeping a diary of what you eat, smell/sense/experience, how much sleep you get … stuff like that every day. It can be a real pain, especially if you don’t get them very often, but finding your triggers should you have them can help you start to avoid them.

Sometimes I have dizzy/lightheadedness spells for what seems like absolutely no reason. Migraines often follow those spells. I didn’t realize this until going over a ‘diary’ I logged for a few months. I know having no insurance makes it hard to see a doctor regularly but a doctor could help you decipher your diary and manage the migraines. I can’t do pain meds (which means I luv me some ice packs and breathing techniques) so I just deal with them. Hopefully you can find your triggers and avoid them. I wouldn’t wish migraines on anyone.

  • I had my first occular migraine at work 2 days before Christmas when I was 23 (12 years ago). I lost all the vision in the left side of my left eye. It looked like I was trying to look out a wet window on a sunny day.

I called home to ask my mother what I should do and she said “Go to the ER right now, 2 of your great grandparents died of strokes!” Uh, way to be calm and reassuring there mom. LOL

I ended up going to my eye doctor who said to avoid chocolate, caffeine, aged cheese, red wine and nuts.

Rest up and relax and try not to read or look at a computer screen too much.

  • I have Aura migraines as well. I’ve only had one bad major one. I had to call my mother-in-law because I was puking courtesy of it. :(

Good luck!! Now it’s time to figure out the trigger, recognize the signs, and medicate before it gets bad. If you notice it, pop some Tylenol (safe for pregnancy), and either eat some chocolate or drink a caffeine drink (tea, coffee, soda). The caffeine is supposed to help. I’d suggest Excedrin Migraine, but it’s not considered really safe for pregnancy.

    October 10, 2008
  • Very glad you and the baby are ok! Sometimes you just have to take precautions like going to the ER. Even though it sucks.

I just started getting migraines in July. So it’s fun. But in my googling, I learned that you can get hormonal migraines during pregnancy (or right before/during your period). So maybe once you have the baby, the auras and stuff will stop. (I hope so!)

In the meantime, I’d say that in addition to paying attention to triggers like n0name28 said, pay attention to how you’re feeling. Once you start to see the pretty colors, it might be time to close your eyes for a minute or dim the lights and pop a movie in or come inside out of the sun or whatever makes you feel better. You might even be able to start to recognize symptoms that happen before you start tripping out.

    Take care of yourself, ok?

  • I’m SO glad you & the baby are ok Lotus~that sounds like it’s terrifying to expereince & I can imagine it was intensified now that you’re pregnant. I was scared/worried when I saw the pic of the hospital bracelet though, until I read that the baby was fine (not that I wasn’t worried about you too, but you know what I mean)!

I get migraines occasionally but not the ones w/the auras. You are so fortunate that you had someone close by that could drive you to the ER & take care of Braden (an angel of God, I agree!).

Don’t you worry about how much/little time you spend on the computer~we will all be here regardless. You take care of YOU & BOTH BABIES~that’s what’s MOST important right now. When I 1st began blogging a little over 2 years ago, I’d post almost every day during the week & occasionally on weekends. Now I’m lucky if I post once during the week & now I always post on Sundays for Weekly Winners 😉 I lost some readers when I didn’t post as often but my hubby & kids come 1st.

My point is, your true friends/blogger friends will understand & be there regardless. IF they don’t understand when a little break is needed, then they’re just not human! I happen to be one of those (a blogger friend, I hope 😉 ) that DO understand & will be here regardless. You take all the time you need & take care of YOU, BRADEN & THAT MIRACLE IN YOUR TUMMY :)

Take care of yourself Lotus :)

And on a less encouraging note — Daughter #3 had migrains the whole time she was preg. with her first child. It was not a fun time for her, or for the rest of us watching her go through such pain. Be sure you let your OBGYN know about this. There is stuff they can give you that can help you and is safe for the baby. I just don’t remember what it was she took. I’m sure you doc will know though.

I also did not get a headache the first time. I have not had many episodes but all three of my children get them in different ways. My youngest daughter had numbness and tingling in her fingers and the visual stuff with the headaches, my oldest daughter has tininitus and dizziness and headaches, and my son has the visual auras with bad headaches. My two daughters have had MRI’s to rule out other things and been to neurologists. My oldest was prescribed with Zoloft to help hers and it has been working. I hope yours just goes away and doesn’t return.

Oh, honey! I’m SO glad you’re okay. Glad you went to the hospital too, to set your mind at ease. Alli and your angel seriously ROCK, wow! Its things like that that repeatedly reassure me that all will be well with the world, when people are willing to help like that.

I used to have the field of vision weirdness too – black and white geometrical patterns over everything and I couldn’t see, same deal. I had it checked out too, but at the time was told it was “nothing” and they basically had no clue, so this was informative! I DID have migraines, and I’d know one was coming within the day when I got this vision weirdness. Although, I also had migraines without the vision thing happening first sometimes.

I noticed that when I was at work, looking at a particular computer screen under a particular florescent light, it almost always happened. It did happen at other times though, but that was the only trigger I ever was sure of. Its something to watch for, if you notice anything in particular triggering it, it can help to stay away from it.

It has been a few years since I had a migraine or the vision thing, thankfully!

  • Oh Hon! I’m so glad everything is ok. I suffered from migraines off and on in my twenties. When I was pg with my first baby I started getting the ocular migraines in my 3rd trimester. I would get them if I hadn’t eaten in a while and my blood sugar was low. If I was able to suck down a caffeinated soda real fast it would restore my vision.

Anyway, the migraines were a symptom of pre-eclampsia. Make sure you tell your ob about them and be mindful of the other pre-e symptoms. (and fwiw, my pre-e never effected my blood pressure or proteins until I went into labor and by then it was bad! I had started swelling at 20 weeks though, and my doc never thought it was pre-e related)

I drove a coworker to the ER with one of those, a while back – shoot, I was convinced the woman was having a stroke, and knew she couldn’t see to drive. She’s 12 years younger than me! Scared her, scared me. She was fine, and hasn’t had one since, to the best of my knowledge. I’ve had four migraines – once, I asked the nurse if surgical removal of the head was an outpatient procedure. She laughed, but I was eying my electric carving knife…
